The Music Department is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music. Our programs are designed to provide talented students with a wide range of experiences in music history and literature, music theory, and performance. All music classes and lessons are open to qualified students, regardless of major.
The Music Department offers a Bachelor of Arts in music and the music minor within the the BA curriculum. The required courses for each program are important for building basic musicianship. Elective courses are chosen under Music Department advisement according to the student’s interests, needs and career goals.
Many different career options are available by combining music with another major or a minor in a related field. These combinations have prepared students for careers and further study in creative arts therapy, music theatre and the music industry. The Music Department also participates in several interdisciplinary majors and minors, such as American Studies, African-American Studies,Women’s Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Arts Management. There are many opportunities for musical performance in concerts by the numerous departmental vocal and instrumental organizations and in student recitals.
Oswego's music students have many opportunities to put their study of theory, history, and technique into action by performing as soloists, chamber musicians, of in one of the department's many ensembles, including Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, College-Community Orchestra, Festival Chorus, College Choir, and State Singers. Students can also perform in annual music theatre and opera productions.
Mu Beta Psi, a national honorary music fraternity, and Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society, offer exceptional students the opportunity to provide service to the department and greater community. These distinctive groups enrich the department's culture of active student participation and academic rigor.
Throughout the year, SUNY Oswego's Music department hosts many performances by its own faculty and other visiting professional musicians giving students the chance to learn from and work closely with those successful in the field.
Students who wish to become music majors or minors must audition on their main instrument or voice type. Auditions at SUNY Oswego are usually held in the spring during spring open houses, but students may contact the department for additional dates. Auditions are used primarily for correct placement in studios.
