The Journalism staff at SUNY Oswego has created a program that keeps students abreast of new developments in gathering, writing and producing news. Through print, broadcast and Internet publications the SUNY Oswego Journalism Department offers students hands-on experience to ensure practical knowledge in varied formats.
What a Journalism major involves:
- Learn to gather, write, edit, package, and produce the news.
- Develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills.
- Examine social, ethical, and legal dimensions of journalism.
- Enjoy multimedia orientation with broadcast, print, computer and graphic arts.
- Build a portfolio through internship experience with professional organizations
The Journalism program at SUNY Oswego provides students with the experience and expertise they need for the real world. The Communication Studies department at SUNY Oswego includes a Journalism program that prepares students for today's mass media. The program includes training in print, broadcast, and internet journalism.
As journalism majors or minors, students will learn to gather, write, edit, package, and produce the news according to industry standards. Along with the basics, a student will also learn to keep up with the ever-expanding world of mass media.
Journalism writing classes at SUNY Oswego are taught in modern computer labs, as opposed to lecture halls, to simulate a real-world writing environment. This helps prepare students for the career of a journalist.
Students will have the opportunity to build a portfolio with the Oswegonian, a student-run organization that produces a weekly newspaper. Print journalism is not the only place for students to gain experience. WRVO-NPR is our local station that houses student internships. WTOP, our student run television stations, and WNYO, our student-run radio station, offer more opportunity for students. These two stations use the same equipment that is used by professionals all over the country!
For those who are specifically interested in broadcast journalism, there is a full broadcast track that covers areas such as broadcast performance, video production, and news reporting. For more information about SUNY Oswego's Journalism program contact:
